Self-Care Sunday: 5 Yoga Routines for the Busy Solicitor

During April, with the weather improving and with time on my hands with the longer evenings, it was time to revisit my yoga practice more consistently.

My journey with yoga has been continuing for many years, and it continues to be a source of inner calm and clear focus in my life, especially during law school, which I wrote about previously and which you can read here.

Over the years, I have had many instructors in the Himalaya Yoga Valley in Cork, the elbowroom in Dublin and other independent business owners connected through Junior Chamber International monthly meetings.

Recently, after several recommendations on YouTube and hearing more and more online, I eventually arrived at the Yoga with Adriene channel, and have discovered a wonderful world of specially curated yoga routines that focus on different areas such as productivity, weight loss and mindset shifting.

Adriene Mishler's teaching style is one of peaceful calm, gentle encouragement and a certain down to earth nature that has resonated with me personally during this tumultuous period.

During this time even before I have begun my career, it is a commitment to use yoga to improve my practice at my own pace, truly appreciate the benefits, and maximise the positive outcomes each time I step onto the mat.

While no one is expected to do a headstand or have the most perfect technique in the first few classes, the ethos is to ensure that you are practicing safely and listening to your body and having an open mind.

So I would like to recommend a few routines that I have tried and found to be immensely helpful.

These routines would be suited for solicitors who wish to fit more yoga into their daily routines, with a routine set for certain times of the day to fit in with a busy schedule.

1. Morning Routine

2. Mid-day boost

3. Self Confidence Boost

4. Focus Pick Me Up

5. Winding Down at Bedtime

For beginners, those who are returning to yoga practice or those who want a gentle, low impact practice:-

For anyone who is a complete beginner or wants to fine-tune the basics, this playlist is very helpful to explore the foundation poses of yoga practice:-

Adriene also provides several 30-day challenges for those who enjoy staying to a consistent routine and accountability:-

If you are not sure if you can perform a more complicated pose or feel the body protesting, take a step back and where possible, wait for in-person classes to resume with a yoga instructor on hand to ensure you are performing the routines safely, especially any balance postures.

Feel free to browse Adriene's channel for more tailored content for energy-boosting, strength building for certain areas, combatting anxiety and improving flexibility for yogis of all levels.

You can also check out the Himalaya Yoga Valley and the elbowroom for online classes and in-person classes when they can open up once again.

I will also link below to two wonderful yoga instructors who provided online classes to JCI members during the pandemic.

Stay well, stay safe and thank you for reading.
